James World
James World rose from painfully complex origins. Michael’s father was a worship leader who had a fatal heart attack while playing music at church. The guitar Michael writes on to this day is the instrument his dad played on during his final performance. “That event shows that through trauma and heartbreak beautiful events can occur. My goal is to give everything to music just like my father did,” Michael explains. The alt-rock quintet’s debut, Funny Dreams, comes out May 24th.

James Band is Michael Madrid, vocals/guitar; Nate Ray, drums; Harrison Ray, bass guitar; Connor Sanchez, synthesizer/vocals; and Kalebh Ryals, guitar. Previously, The James Band issued an EP back in 2016.The five-piece band’s latest, Funny Dreams, offers a powerful study in contrasts. “The album title references the dreams we have that are so personal that sometimes you feel like you have to hold back from telling people because you don’t want to reveal parts of yourself,” Michael shares. The songs exhibit a loosely-coiled experimental rock artiness that evokes This Heat, and the Dismemberment Plan melded with the poetic vulnerability of Jeff Buckley.

The 10-song album is an album-oriented experience, brimming with chiming alt-rock ballads, dense sound collage pieces, ambitiously immersive arrangements, and heart-pumping loud/soft dynamics. Lyrically, Michael uses abstraction and metaphor to convey achingly beautiful sentiments “My approach is openness, vulnerability, and transparency—I want to leave everything on the table. That said, we always try to not take ourselves too seriously,” Michael admits.

Pun intended, Funny Dreams has been a dream of Michael’s for a long time. “Putting this album out represents a turning point for me and the guys, and it marks a new age. It’s all been healing, even though it feels uncomfortable sometimes to be this revealing. In the end, I want people to be as open as this can from which I am drinking from,” Michael says, laughter trailing off.
