Eden: A burlesque show that explores plants between science and fiction.

What would you do if your salad bit you back or started to talk? Inspired by the multimedia exhibit about the role of plants in science fiction literature, art, and cinematography on display at the University of Arizona in Fall 2022, this burlesque show brings together the natural sciences, visual culture, and art –   combining stunning visuals through performance storytelling – asking us to pay attention to what we often consider to be mere scenery and examine our thinking about plants. In light of our current ecological crisis, an encounter with plants as intelligent beings who talk back might just enable us to imagine different ways of living together on our shared planet.

In addition to the burlesque performances, audience members will be invited to partake in Plant Speed Dating to overcome “plant blindness” and create new ways of engaging with plant life.

The event is sponsored in part by  the University of Arizona College of Humanities, the Department of German Studies, Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research and the Poetry Center, as well as the International Office and the Kulturbüro of the University of Münster, and the Literary and Cultural Plant Studies Network.  Additional support is provided in collaboration with the American Geophysical Union Voices for Science program, the Tucson Audubon and Drutopia.
