It all started at The Yardbird Suite in Leeds, UK in 1996. The legendary jazz-funk revivalists, The Greyboy Allstars, embarked on their maiden voyage to the UK with a stop at the legendary jazz club hosted by Eddie Roberts and a supporting set from his organ trio, The Three Deuces. That night sparked a mutual admiration between both groups as they had met their cross-continental counterparts who were reinvigorating 60s boogaloo soul-jazz. It was a once-in-a-lifetime connection between devout loyalists of exploring vintage tones, digging for records, and forging paths as trailblazers of the funk and soul revival in the late 90s and early 00s.

Roberts would later form the international funk group The New Mastersounds in 1999 whose expansive career has issued 12 studio albums, earned coveted appearances at international festivals, and even made headway on the Billboard contemporary jazz albums charts with the release of their 2019 studio album ‘Shake It’  that celebrated the group’s 20th anniversary. Meanwhile, The Greyboy Allstars continued to preserve the heritage of jazz-funk giants while cultivating timeless music of their own as individual members of the group would flourish into sought-after collaborators, notable film composers, and studio standouts.

With Roberts residing in the US, collaboration with members of The Greyboy Allstars became frequent, especially between him and keyboardist/organist Robert Walter. Using his own record label and music platform, Color Red, as a springboard, they could now travel back in time to their initial meeting 26 years ago and assemble the dream team of funk enthusiasts and analog recording devotees featuring Roberts on guitar, Walters on keyboards, GBA’s Chris Stillwell on bass, and GBA alum Zak Najor on drums.

Despite being a brand new project, all four members of The Rare Sounds have played in numerous projects with each other over the years and have automatic chemistry and musical shorthand. Everyone gets all the references and shares a common language and love for the traditions of the music. The group recorded 10 tracks for their debut LP at Hyde Street Studios in San Francisco, CA in August 2021 and made their live debut at Cervantes’ Masterpiece Ballroom in Denver, CO for two packed-out nights leaving listeners in eager anticipation of what’s to come. The group will release their debut LP via Color Red in summer 2022.

Every Last Leaf , the fifth full-length studio album from Vermont quartet Twiddle, is a bold exploration of the cyclical nature of life. Propelled by constant evolution in its 18 years touring, the band —Mihali Savoulidis [vocals, guitar], Ryan Dempsey [keys, organ, synth], Brook Jordan [drums], and Zdenek Gubb [bass], welcomes a musical rebirth, leaning heavily on enigmatically stoic songwriting in lieu of the affably saccharine. Longtime listeners can expect an elevated presentation of Twiddle’s trademark sound, delicately orbiting the worlds of funk, jazz, rock, reggae, and bluegrass.

Every Last Leaf is a metaphor for life,” Mihali explains. “When a leaf falls to the ground, something will grow from it. Everything is part of this grand circle. In the music, we’re exploring all of life’s sides—from the sad and angry to the proud and happy.”

Known for jaw-dropping live performances, the group has repeatedly sold out some of the most legendary venues in the world, including Red Rocks Amphitheatre and Capitol Theatre. Plus, they’ve ignited festivals such as Bonnaroo and Electric Forest in addition to launching and headlining their own annual extravaganza Tumble Down Festival. Along the way, they have built a powerful catalog highlighted by the 2017 double-disc epic Plump (Chapters 1 & 2). Thus far, they’ve also gathered over 100 million streams and counting. Throughout 2021, Twiddle wrote and recorded Every Last Leaf. For the first time, they teamed up with producer Clint Bierman behind-the-board, recording in Sugar Shack, Mihali’s home studio, and Clint’s own spot.

“It was a blast,” smiles Mihali. “Having a good time was important to all of us. It was more relaxed with a lot less pressure. We’d never worked with a producer before. We tried it out with Clint, vibed with him, and went with it. We expanded the sound and added a lot of layers. There are also three- and four-part vocal harmonies, which we’ve never really done in the past. It was a different process.”

In the end, Twiddle have creatively found their way on Every Last Leaf.

“When you listen to this, I hope you experience the beauty we did,” he leaves off. “If you feel anything at all, mission accomplished. There are a lot of moments on this album that tie up the elements of life. It’s real.”

For Thee Sacred Souls, the first time is often the charm. The band’s first club dates led to a record deal with the revered Daptone label; their first singles racked up more than ten million streams in a year and garnered attention from Billboard, Rolling Stone, and KCRW; and their first fans included the likes of Gary Clark Jr., The Black Pumas, Princess Nokia, and Timbaland. Now, the breakout San Diego trio is ready to deliver yet another landmark first with the release of their self-titled debut.

“Every step of the way has just been so organic,” says drummer Alex Garcia. “Things just seem to happen naturally when the three of us get together.”

Indeed, there’s something inevitable about the sound of Thee Sacred Souls, as if Garcia and his bandmates—bassist Sal Samano and singer Josh Lane—have been playing together for a lifetime already. Produced by Bosco Mann (aka Daptone co-founder Gabriel Roth), Thee Sacred Souls is a warm and textured record, mixing the easygoing grace of sweet ’60s soul with the grit and groove of early ’70s R&B, and the performances are utterly intoxicating, with Lane’s weightless vocals anchored by the rhythm section’s deep pocket and infectious chemistry. Hints of Chicano, Philly, Chicago, Memphis, and even Panama soul turn up here, and while it’s tempting to toss around labels like “retro” with a deliberately analog collection like this, there’s also something distinctly modern about the band that defies easy categorization.

Omar Apollo is one of music’s most exciting shape-shifters. As the 24-year-old Latin GRAMMY-nominated singer/songwriter prepares his debut album, he’s holding close to music that feels inventive, experimental, and true to his wide-ranging passion. R&B remains the foundation, but Apollo is branching out with a bilingual fusion of funk, pop, electronic, hip-hop, reggaéton, corridos—as he puts it, “everything.” Apollo’ has had a transformative but linear journey, from listening to Brandy and Stevie Wonder as a kid, to plucking away at a guitar at as a pre-teen, to self-releasing a pair of EPs as a young man—2018’s Stereo and 2019’s Friends—that established his signature “bedroom soul” and earned him love from fans and press (Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, The FADER, et al.). As unique as his sound is, Apollo has garnered as much attention for his lyrics—themes of romantic yearning and self-improvement swirled up with expressions of cultural heritage and identity. Now, he’s leaning even more into all of it, making music that feels closer to his heart than ever. In 2020, he released his unapologetically open-hearted mixtape Apolonio which featured fan favorite “Want U Around” and showed the artist foreshadowing what’s to come next from him musically. Approaching his forthcoming album, Ivory, the artist who once called himself “just a kid from Indiana” is breaking new ground, abandoning all comfort zones, and never looking back.
